My Favourite Family Days Near Prior Park, Bath
I'd pair Prior Park Landscape Gardens with canal walks, child-friendly Bath sights and family stays around Bath; come find your own favourite route at an easy pace.
I have a soft spot for days that give a family room to explore without making every step feel like a mission. My old warden's instinct still says: choose a good path first, and let the day grow from there.
A garden day with room to roam
Ralph Allen's 18th-century Prior Park Landscape Garden is my natural starting point: paths descend through a hillside valley towards lakes and the Palladian Bridge, with the Bath Skyline route joining the garden. A question visitors often asked me at a gate was, 'Which path should we take with children?' My answer here would be to plan for the steep slopes, then enjoy the short level routes at the top or around the lower lakes; the National Trust garden team can advise which paths suit the day.
A couple of welcoming bases
For a garden outing, I like a base that makes the return journey simple; these Bath-area addresses offer rather different ways to settle in. You can browse more Bath hotels and apartments for other options.

Old Mill Hotel & Lodge
3 stars7.2 Good3306 reviewsAbout 6 km from Prior Park, it suits families who want family rooms, a garden and terrace, with a restaurant and bar on site; tea and coffee facilities are in every room, and the reception is up 13 steps with no lift (family-room details).
Follow the water, or take the higher path
For another measured outing, the Bath Skyline is a 10 km circular walk through woodland and meadows, with historic remains and follies along the way; it connects with Prior Park, though the full circuit is a hillier choice. The Kennet & Avon Canal towpath offers a gentler family wander from Widcombe or Sydney Gardens, and day boats, canoes and bikes can be hired at Sydney Wharf; I'd choose the boat if everyone wants to share the exploring.

Small discoveries around Bath
Royal Victoria Park makes an easy family companion to the Georgian sights, with an adventure playground, mini golf and free Botanical Gardens below the Royal Crescent. In the city centre, the Roman Baths' family trails and costumed characters give children a way into the story of Aquae Sulis, while Bath Abbey has a family trail and a Discovery Museum; Pulteney Bridge and the riverside Parade Gardens round out a lovely day without needing another long walk.
A winter visit with a little ceremony
Bath Christmas Market runs from 26 November to 13 December 2026 around the Abbey quarter, with free entry and stalls selling crafts, gifts, food and drink; I'd make it part of a family city day rather than the whole plan. Christmas at the Roman Baths adds torchlit afternoons and choirs to the visit, giving the ancient site a seasonal chapter too.
I hope you find a favourite path of your own, whether it leads down through Prior Park or along the canal.
