A warm, personal address book of family-friendly hotels and the Southside sights, parks and shows around Glasgow Central Mosque.

My Favourite Family Bases Near Glasgow Central Mosque

I spent my working life learning when a place shows its best face, and I carry that habit into cities. The Southside of Glasgow, where Glasgow Central Mosque stands, has become one of my favourite corners to wander with a family in tow.

This is my little address book of sights, parks, shows and the hotels I'd choose as a base, grouped the way I'd tell a friend over a cup of tea.

Where I Begin: The Southside

Glasgow Central Mosque - my fixed point on the south bank in the Gorbals, so everything below is measured from this side of the river.

Citizens Theatre - back in its restored Victorian home since August 2025, with a Christmas production from late November, and so lovely for families!

O2 Academy Glasgow - on Eglinton Street, where Barenaked Ladies play on 6 December 2026; the balcony is for ages 8 and over, so it's one for the older children.

My honest view: for a first trip with children I would rather be a short drive out than squeezed into the middle of town.

    Kings Park Hotel

Kings Park Hotel - my quiet pick on the Overtoun Park side of the south, a 12-minute drive from the centre with free parking and family rooms, though there's no lift, so it suits light packers best. Tripadvisor ↗

Green, River and Rainy Days

Glasgow Green - the city's oldest park and free to roam, and I always take the children to the Doulton Fountain first!

People's Palace - closed until December 2029, so please don't plan around it; Winter Wonderland usually fills the Green from late November with an ice rink and a Big Top.

Riverside Museum - free, with a recreated cobbled street that children remember longest, and my favourite for a wet morning!

Tall Ship Glenlee - moored alongside on a small separate ticket, and still mid-restoration.

Glasgow Science Centre - across the river, with a planetarium and hands-on halls; it keeps shorter autumn hours from Wednesday to Sunday, so I'd go early.

Evenings at the Hydro

OVO Hydro - a huge arena where the venue advises that under-fives skip concerts not aimed at them, and a few booster seats can be borrowed first come, first served.

Cody Johnson - 2 November 2026 with doors at 6.30pm and no under-8s, so one for the grown-ups!

Noah Kahan - 5 November 2026, with seated tickets for ages 8 and over and an adult needed for under-16s; a good family night out.

Tantrum Doughnuts - brioche doughnuts in Finnieston that the children will talk about for days, so worth it!

    Village Hotel Glasgow

    4 stars

Village Hotel Glasgow - the best base for the riverside and the Hydro, a 5-minute walk from the SECC and Finnieston, with a 20-metre pool and family rooms; you trade the Merchant City's nightlife for easy evenings! family hotel ->

Football and Wide Green Spaces

Hampden Park - Scotland's national stadium, and the best wet-weather plan for football-mad children; tours run on timed slots, so book ahead.

Scottish Football Museum - the family ticket covers two adults and two children, and I'd call it good value!

Burrell Collection - free, with glass walls that look straight into the trees, and I could happily spend a whole morning here.

Pollok Country Park - Glasgow's largest park, with a Highland cattle fold; ask at the Burrell's front desk where the cattle are grazing that week, because I never promise an animal will be in view.

Go in the morning in autumn, when the daylight shortens fast.

Holiday Inn Glasgow - East Kilbride By Ihg

    4 stars
    7.6 Good1094 reviews

Holiday Inn Glasgow - East Kilbride By Ihg - the pick for the south-east, 7 miles from the city centre with a pool, family rooms and the National Museum of Rural Life half a mile away; you gain space and give up walkability, and it's one of the friendliest family hotels in East Kilbride!

A Day North, By Train or Car

Stirling Castle - a royal palace on a crag with the Wallace Monument across the valley, under an hour by train from Queen Street; book your castle ticket online.

Loch Lomond - Balloch is around 45 minutes by train, and Sweeney's cruises sail from there, so it's my favourite family day out!

Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies - the world's only rotating boat lift and two giant steel horse heads, easiest by car.

I'd choose the shoulder season, spring or early autumn, and avoid still summer evenings by the loch, when midges gather.

    Crowwood Hotel And Alba Restaurant

    3 stars
    7.4 Good1060 reviews

Crowwood Hotel And Alba Restaurant - the base for the north, a 10-minute drive from the city centre and 25 minutes from Stirling, with free parking and family rooms for up to four; you trade the walkable centre for calm beside the golf club! Booking.com ↗

A Few Words Before You Wander

The question visitors always asked me at the gate was, 'How far is it, and where do we park?' Choose your base by the day you're planning, then check parking, which three of these four hotels give you free.

Early in my warden years I learned that the happiest families were never the ones who crammed in the most, so leave room to wander.
