North Yorkshire Family-Friendly Hotels: My Secure Favourites
A former park warden's warm, safety-minded list of North Yorkshire's family-friendly hotels - coast, moors, Dales and market towns, chosen with care.
I spent enough years patrolling a reserve to trust my own read of a place within minutes of arriving, and I bring exactly that habit to hotels now. North Yorkshire has no shortage of family-friendly addresses, from the Scarborough coast to the quiet end of Wensleydale, and what follows is my own gathered list of the ones whose front desk and grounds gave me that same settled, well-minded feeling I used to look for at closing time on the reserve.
Reading the Ground Before You Settle
Twenty-odd years of locking a reserve gate at dusk teaches you to recognise the same quiet order wherever you find it: a lit reception, a front door someone actually minds, staff who know the grounds once the day visitors have gone. These days I travel with my old companion rather than a radio, but I still clock the same details in a hotel as I once did on patrol. A family-friendly address only earns my attention if the people on the desk can out-explain a worried parent. What follows is North Yorkshire's coast, moors, Dales and market towns read through exactly that lens.
Along the Scarborough Coast
The coast here keeps its family hotels close to the cliffs and, happily, close to a staffed desk too - the kind of set-up that let me relax on holiday the way I rarely could on duty.

Deep in the Dales
The Dales properties on this list sit further from each other than the coast ones, which suited me fine - I've always preferred a hotel where the nearest neighbour is a drystone wall.

Owl, Hambleton By Marston'S Inns
4 stars7.8 Good926 reviewsFamily rooms with a work desk and a spacious beer garden at a traditional Marston's Inn nine minutes' drive from Selby, within easy reach of both Leeds and York - plain, well-kept and easy to find after dark. Read more on Tripadvisor.
One Thing Everyone Asks at the Door
Visitors used to ask me the same thing at the reserve gate - 'is it safe to let them wander?' - and I give the same answer about a hotel now: ask the front desk directly what's locked and when, and let their answer do the deciding. Every property above passed that small test for me, from the Scarborough cliffs down to the Dales. Go and find your own favourite among them; after years of looking, I still haven't settled on just one.
