A Warden's Guide to Sleeping Near Tellefson Park
Come wander with me: my favourite airport-side hotels near Tellefson Park, Los Angeles, from Culver City studios to the Venice shore.
I never expected an old park warden to fall for a city of freeways, yet this corner of Los Angeles keeps pulling me back.
Studio towns, harbours and long beaches sit side by side here, and I have loved wandering all of them.
Come and see which of my favourite beds suits you!
How I Choose a Bed
I spent years walking a reserve before dawn, and it taught me that a good trip starts with a good bed.
So I judge every address as a warden would: where it sits, who is awake at the front desk, and how easily I can leave at first light.
Here are five favourites, grouped by the kind of day they set you up for!
Where the Planes Come In
Los Angeles International sits about 26 km from Downtown, so an early flight is the best reason to sleep close.
Taxis and ride-hail cars collect you from the LAX-it lot, and a free shuttle runs to the LAX/Metro Transit Center for the K and C lines.
The SkyLink people mover was still in testing in October 2026, so I plan around the shuttles and leave a little extra time.

Hilton Los Angeles Airport
4 stars8.1 Very Good4777 reviewsHilton Los Angeles Airport - my pick for an easy exit: the free 24-hour shuttle carries you to the terminals, the outdoor pool soothes tired travellers, and Dockweiler Beach State Park is less than 6 km away, though you trade neighbourhood charm for convenience ->
When the Stadium Lights Go On
The big venues sit close to the airport hotels, and they shape the calendar.
SoFi Stadium hosts Super Bowl LXI in February 2027, while the Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum keep large nights coming all year.
In July 2028 the Olympic opening ceremony will be shared by the Coliseum and SoFi, so book early and keep your plans flexible!
A Studio Town Worth Waking Up In
Culver City was MGM's home for decades, and the Sony Pictures lot still offers a two-hour guided walking tour.
Under-18s need an adult with them, and parking is free in the Overland structure.
'Jeopardy!' and 'Wheel of Fortune' are taped there, with free audience tickets handed out by official ticketing companies, so reserve weeks ahead.
Dinner at Pasta Sisters in the Helms Bakery complex is my easy favourite!

The Culver Hotel
4 stars8.3 Very Good70 reviewsThe Culver Hotel - my pick for studio-town evenings: the Lobby Bar and Cafe and an outdoor patio make it a sociable base, Sony Pictures is less than 1.6 km away and LAX about 11 km, though you trade the sea for a walkable town (where to stay in Culver City).
Boats, Masts and Quiet Water
Marina del Rey is a large man-made harbour for small craft, with harbour cruises and paddleboarding on offer.
Each December its Holiday Boat Parade lights the water from Burton Chace Park.
I love water that feels settled, and this is the calm end of the coast!

Foghorn Harbor Inn
3 stars7.1 Good560 reviewsFoghorn Harbor Inn - my pick for a quiet beachfront base: Marina del Rey Beach is a few steps away, a 24-hour front desk and full-day security watch over free parking, and LAX is 7 km off, though you trade Venice's bustle for a 1.9 km stroll up the shore; see its own site.

Venice, Easy and Alive
Venice began in 1905 as Abbot Kinney's 'Venice of America', and its Ocean Front Walk now runs about 4 km of performers, murals and Muscle Beach.
Inland, the canals are a quiet maze of footbridges, and Abbot Kinney Boulevard has Gjelina and the Gjusta bakery.
The promenade is lively by day and thinner after dark, so keep valuables close and stay on busy stretches.

Venice V Hotel
3 stars8.7 Fabulous289 reviewsVenice V Hotel - stay here for the boardwalk: the beach is a one-minute walk, rooms have sea views, the front desk never closes and there is bicycle parking, though you trade quiet for the best address on the sand, with LAX 9 km away; read the traveller reviews.

Venice Breeze Suites
3 stars8.1 Very Good699 reviewsVenice Breeze Suites - my pick for slower stays: every studio has a full kitchen, the rooftop deck has a barbecue and the Santa Monica Pier is eight minutes by car, though you trade a grand lobby for a home-style set-up; see the Google Travel listing.
Pier, Sand and the Long Bike Path
Santa Monica Pier opened in 1909 and still holds Pacific Park's solar Ferris wheel and the Looff Hippodrome carousel.
The Marvin Braude bike trail follows the bay for about 35 km, flat enough for any pace.
Swim only near staffed lifeguard towers, and stay out of the water for about 72 hours after rain!
The Villa on the Hill
The Getty Villa, a Roman-style country house in Pacific Palisades, is free with a timed reservation and closed on Mondays.
The Getty Center closes to the public from March 15, 2027 until spring 2028, while the Villa stays open throughout.
If I had one slow morning, I would spend it among the Villa's gardens!
A Wilder Coast
Malibu is a separate beach city strung along the Pacific Coast Highway, and it is where I feel most at home.
Point Dume is the headland for whale watching from December to April, and Leo Carrillo State Park holds tide pools at the western edge.
Whales are a pattern, never a promise, so ask the ranger at Leo Carrillo about tides and what has been moving that week.
The 2025 fires left closures in Topanga State Park and at Will Rogers, so check with the park office before any hike.
Small Habits for a Calm Trip
The question visitors always asked me at the gate was whether it was safe to leave a bag in the car while they walked.
My answer is the same now: leave nothing visible in a parked car, especially at trailheads and beaches.
This coast also sits on active faults, so if the ground shakes, Drop, Cover and Hold On, and install the free MyShake app for early warning.
On dry hillsides never smoke or light a fire, and check for Red Flag days before parking on hillside streets.
Wander Well
These are my favourite beds, but the best ones are always the ones you find yourself.
Walk a little, ask a ranger or a front desk, and trust your own instincts; prices and availability can change, so confirm when you book.
