A Guide to My Favourite Airport Stays Near Limehouse

I came to Limehouse the way I come to any new place: early, curious and with a flask in my pocket.

I was fond of it before I'd looked at a single bed.

These are the stays I'd book near it, and the little wanders I'd do from each front door.

Limehouse is where I start, because it is where the Regent's Canal towpath finishes its long walk from Little Venice.

I do love a route with a proper ending, and this one has the river waiting.

The DLR and rail stations here make it an easy base for the Docklands and the City airport beyond.

Head west and the Tower of London is the sight I'd never skip: a fortress begun after 1066 and a World Heritage Site since 1988.

Book a timed ticket online, arrive at opening and go straight to the Jewel House before the queues build.

Then join a free Yeoman Warder tour and allow three to four hours.

Tower Bridge is next door, free to walk across, and its paid Exhibition has the glass-floored high-level walkways.

On the reserve I learned that a place shows its character in the first hour, so I give that hour to green space.

Mudchute Park and Farm on the Isle of Dogs is free and open daily; I'd ring the Mudchute Association, who run it, and ask which paths are open and when the gate opens.

Greenwich Park is my other favourite, with its classic view from the General Wolfe statue towards Canary Wharf; the Royal Parks office can tell you the gate times.

I never promise a sighting anywhere, because wildlife is a pattern and the offices read it better than I do.

Canary Wharf is a different sort of habitat, all glass and water, and in January it glows.

Canary Wharf Winter Lights fills the estate with illuminated artworks, free, from about 5pm to 10pm.

The 2027 edition is expected on 19 to 30 January, and most pieces are outdoors along the docks, so wrap up warm.

London City Airport sits in the Royal Docks, and the DLR links it to Canary Wharf in 18 minutes and to Bank in 22.

The question visitors always asked me at the gate was where to stay to see it all, and my answer never changed.

Sleep near the hour you have to be somewhere, and let everything else bend around it.

ExCeL is the Royal Docks' great exhibition hall, and WTM London, a trade-only travel show, fills it on 3 to 5 November 2026.

The London Book Fair moves there on 16 to 18 March 2027, with registration required.

Royal Docks rooms get busy in those weeks, so I'd book early.

Maritime Greenwich is a World Heritage Site, and I'd give it a whole day.

The National Maritime Museum and the Queen's House are free, and the Cutty Sark is ticketed.

The Royal Observatory closes on 2 November 2026 until summer 2027 for its refurbishment, so plan your day around the park and the museums.

The O2 is the big gig barn across the river, and the winter is full: Korn on 4 November, Noah Kahan on 13 November, Bryson Tiller on 7 December and Kehlani on 8 December 2026.

2027 brings aespa on 16 January, Five Finger Death Punch on 23 January, Olivia Rodrigo on 5 April, Thirty Seconds to Mars on 28 April and Gracie Abrams on 30 April.

I wrote this for people who travel with a laptop, so I look for free Wi-Fi, a desk and a front desk that never sleeps.

Several of these places offer exactly that, and I still carry a phone hotspot as a backup, because I never trust a single connection anywhere.
