Product Details

Product Description:

This program traces the development of the horizontal and vertical datum of the United States developed by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and its predecessor agencies, the Coast and Geodetic Survey, US Coast Survey and Survey of the Coast. The presentation will include a detailed discussion of the North American Datum of 1983 and its various iterations, High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN), the inclusion of Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) and the relationship of NAD 83 to the International Terrestrial Frame (ITRF) and the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS 84).

The widespread implementation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) by state government has caused several states to consider the adoption of standard projection to facilitate statewide mapping and efficient data management. GIS require a statewide spatial database to be stored in a common projection or coordinate system to function properly. State Plane Coordinates (SPC83) is the best-known system of the standard projection in the United States and enjoys great support among surveyors and engineers. State Plane Coordinates, however, have the disadvantage of dividing states into separate zones with different projections making the existing state plane system impractical for use as the standard projection for statewide databases. Should a statewide projection be the future of an Alabama coordinate system? This topic will be discussed.

About the Program:

Auburn University’s Engineering Professional Development Distance Learning Series gives engineers and other licensed professionals an affordable and convenient way to earn continuing education credits (CEUs). The flexible format can be adapted for either individual or organizational use.

CEUs, PDHs, CPCs, LUs

  • CEU -Continuing Education Unit
  • PDH -Professional Development Hour
  • CPC -Continuing Professional Competency
  • LU -Learning Units

These are measures of time and/or effort expended in coursework.  Typically, states require either PDHs or CPCs-one PDH, CPC or LUs one contact hour of instruction.  A contact hour is usually considered to be an hour spent in a classroom situation or seminar.  (We list the contact hours of each course.)  CEUSs are normally issued by educational institutions, and are one-tenth for a contact hour-or .3 for a 3-hour seminar.   So for one of our three-hour courses, we issue a certificate that grants .3 CEUs (point-3), which is convertible to  3 PDHs. 1 Contact Hour=.1 CEU=1 PDH=1 CPC =1 LU.  For the courses, the CEU number is exactly one-tenth the number of contact hours—and is therefore convertible to PDHs CPCs or LUs.    (However, in every state the responsibility for determining whether or not courses will be accepted by that state rests with the licensee.  We maintain a permanent record of all CEUs granted.)

The registration fee for individual DVD/CD orders includes the course DVD-R/CD, workbook/handout, an examination covering the course content and objectives, and CEU processing costs. Only one CEU certificate will be issued per individual course order.  Successful passing of an examination (70% for PE's and LS's and 80% for architects) is required before CEU certificates may be issued. During a period of up to 1 year from the original date of purchase, exams may be submitted. The course completion date on the certificate is based on the postmark on the envelope used to return the examination to Auburn for grading. When completing the exam online, the data of completion will be the data appearing on the exam submission email.
