Approximately 16,000 GIS users, managers and developers gathered at the 2016 Esri UC, which included 300 moderated sessions, 450 hours of technical training and 300 software vendors. POB editorial staff attended and came up with a “coolest finds” photo collection. Enjoy!
Sunny San Diego: Yet again, the city of San Diego made for a prime place to host Esri UC 2016, from the wonderful weather to the waterfront views to the long list of food finds.
Massive Map Gallery: The extensive display of maps within the Map Gallery captured GIS-related projects from around the world and across applications. Competition categories included, but were not limited to: analytic presentation map, ArcGIS Pro, instructional map, map series or atlas, most unique and people’s choice.
Virtual Reality: Attendees who stopped by the Melbourne, Fla.-based PLW Modelworks booth had a chance to throw on a pair of virtual reality goggles and fly through a 3D city model created by the company. It proved quite popular.
So Many Sessions: There was no shortage of information sessions at this year’s user conference. They ranged from lightening talks to general trends to best practices to case studies to technical troubleshooting just to name a few. There were at least 300 of them to choose from.
Attention-Getter: Power Engineers, a consulting and engineering firm based in Idaho, didn’t play around — well, maybe they did have some fun — when it came to designing an eye-catching display out of Legos.
Drone Zone: At a time when drone technology is taking off and long-awaited regulatory guidelines are finally available, the unmanned aerial system section of the exhibit floor was buzzing.
Back to the ‘80s: To celebrate 30 years of earth observation from its SPOT satellite, Airbus welcomed attendees to share their ‘80s memories on a sticky note and post it on a wall. In the end, the memories formed the shape of a Pac-Man.
Family Affair: There was something for everyone to do at Esri UC 2016, including the kids. They were able to explore the world using maps and GIS at the Kids Fair.
