My Favourite Central Stays Near Saint Mary's Cathedral
I pair the Royal Mile, free museums, Holyrood walks and seasonal events with central stays near Saint Mary's Cathedral. Come wander Edinburgh at your own pace.
A city best taken one step at a time
In my years as a park warden, visitors often asked me at the gate, 'Do I need to see everything today?' My answer was always no: choose one main outing, leave time to look around, and keep a simpler option in reserve. I use the same rule in Edinburgh, where a walk can lead naturally to a free museum or a quiet pause.
For a cost-conscious stay near Saint Mary's Cathedral, I'd build the day around walkable Old Town sights, then choose a central room that makes coming and going easy.
The Royal Mile, with room to wander
The Royal Mile is the Old Town's historic spine, running downhill from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. I'd take it slowly: pause at St Giles' Cathedral, then duck into one of the closes or visit the free Writers' Museum in Lady Stair's Close, devoted to Robert Burns, Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson.
For a longer indoor stop nearby, the National Museum of Scotland has free permanent galleries spanning Scottish history, natural history, science and world cultures. I like this combination for a day that feels full without relying on a paid attraction at every turn. Browse Edinburgh hotel and apartment listings if you're still weighing up your base.

Roomzzz Edinburgh
4 stars9.1 Superb1694 reviewsAbout a 12-minute walk from Saint Mary's Cathedral, Roomzzz Edinburgh - my favourite for pairing a central base with the freedom of an apartment, thanks to its kitchenettes, ovens and dishwashers; central Edinburgh apartments.
Castle stories and close-by discoveries
Edinburgh Castle rewards a deliberate visit: allow at least two hours for the Royal Palace, St Margaret's Chapel and the Honours of Scotland, then take in the views from the batteries. Timed tickets are sold online, so I'd make the castle the day's main booking rather than squeeze it between several other stops.
Below the castle, the Grassmarket and Victoria Street make a natural continuation on foot. For a guided take on the Old Town's layers, Mercat Tours runs history and ghost walks starting near the Mercat Cross; the tours last about one to two hours and booking is recommended.

Averon Guest House
3 stars8.0 Very Good1772 reviewsAbout a 25-minute walk from Saint Mary's Cathedral, Averon Guest House - a good-value-feeling favourite for a Georgian townhouse stay with continental breakfast, guaranteed free parking and free Scottish musical entertainment in the evening; guest house details ↗.
Holyrood's open-air breathing space
At the lower end of the Royal Mile, Holyrood Park gives the day a different pace. Arthur's Seat is the main climb; the route from the palace end passes St Margaret's Loch and the ruins of St Anthony's Chapel, while the gentler ascent begins above Dunsapie Loch. Allow time for the return walk, and treat wind, rain and darkness seriously on the steep, rocky paths.
I'd make the Scottish Parliament a useful indoor companion to the park: public areas and exhibitions are free to visit, and free guided tours run on selected days. It is a particularly satisfying pairing when the weather calls for a change of plan.

Holyrood Aparthotel
4 stars8.1 Very Good4228 reviewsAbout a 20-minute walk from Saint Mary's Cathedral and five minutes on foot from Holyrood Park, Holyrood Aparthotel - my pick for a self-catering day, with studio and two-bedroom apartments, fully equipped kitchens and washer-dryers; central Edinburgh aparthotel.
A little climb, a lot of skyline
Calton Hill is a compact outing for a city view, with the unfinished National Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument and the Nelson Monument giving the walk its character. The hill is free to visit; the Nelson Monument has a separate admission charge. I'd keep this as a flexible stop, especially if you're already walking between Princes Street and the Old Town.
In winter, nearby Princes Street Gardens host Edinburgh's Christmas market and rides, running from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The market is free to enter, while rides are ticketed.

The Scholar
4 stars9.0 Superb2633 reviewsAbout a 35-minute walk from Saint Mary's Cathedral, The Scholar - a useful base for Holyrood Park and the Meadows, with a contemporary restaurant, garden dining, free on-site parking and electric-car charging points; hotel details ↗.
When the streets become the show
For a lively visit, the Fringe brings free street performances to the Royal Mile from 6 to 30 August 2027, alongside ticketed shows across the city. Edinburgh's Hogmanay also puts the centre at the heart of the occasion: the Torchlight Procession begins at the Meadows on 29 December 2026, followed by celebrations around Princes Street and the Old Town.
One future date especially close to this landmark is Friday 2 July 2027, when the Tour de France Grand Départ starts at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and travels up the Royal Mile. I'd leave time for a simple stroll between events, rather than trying to tick off every sight. Wander a little, and you'll find your own Edinburgh favourites.
