My Favourite Budget Stays in Anchorage
A warm, personal look at cheap Anchorage stays: a motel, an airport-side inn, an Eagle River hotel and a hostel, plus the days out worth saving for.
I came to Anchorage the way I come to most places: slowly, with an old friend and a flask of tea.
It is a city that rewards the early riser, and a modest bed is all you need for it.
Here are my favourite cheap addresses, grouped by the kind of day you are planning. Alongside them are the tours, shows and games I would spend the savings on.
Downtown Mornings on the Trolley
I always start a new place by getting the lay of the land, and in Anchorage that means the trolley!
Anchorage Trolley's 1-Hour City Tour - a narrated loop past Lake Hood's floatplanes and Earthquake Park, and so worth it if you only have a morning.
Anchorage Trolley's Deluxe City Tour - hop-off stops at Earthquake Park, Lake Hood, Ship Creek and Point Woronzof, and my favourite for the panoramic views.
Anchorage City Tour with Chocolate Factory Samplings - smoked salmon, reindeer sausage and a chocolate waterfall make this a delightfully affordable half-day.
The University Side of Town
If your plans lean towards the university and a hockey night, stay on this side and you will spare yourself the downtown parking fuss.
University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves Hockey - a proper small-arena night out, with the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks rivalry on 4 December at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex.

Merrill Field Inn
2 stars7.0 Good1060 reviewsMerrill Field Inn - my pick for the university side, a no-fuss motel with a free summer shuttle and wired internet in every room, and you trade the downtown doorstep for easy free parking!
Cold-Weather Nights at the Egan Center
The long Alaskan evenings are best spent indoors with a crowd, and the William A. Egan Civic and Convention Center fills them well.
Thursday Night Fights: Boxing - a real local tradition, with the 29 October card starting at 7:30pm and the season running into April.

Tumua - Das' How Tour - a stand-up evening on 21 November, with tickets starting at $25.
One small tip: the Egan Center is cashless, so bring a card!
Concert Halls and Late Landings
Anchorage's performing arts centre sits on West 6th Avenue, and it is where I would spend a splurge evening.
Celtic Woman - an 11 December evening at Atwood Concert Hall, a lovely way to warm up a winter trip.

Maria Bamford - at the Discovery Theatre on 27 March 2027, so worth planning a spring trip around!

Puffin Inn
2 starsPuffin Inn - my pick for airport arrivals, with a free 24-hour shuttle, a fridge and microwave in every room, and a gym, and a late landing makes it one of the easiest hotels in Anchorage to reach, though you stay about 4 miles out from the city centre.
Wildlife Days Worth the Early Start
Wildlife is a pattern, never a promise, and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is where I would let that pattern work for you.
Glacier View & Wildlife Anchorage Adventure Tour - a small-group day along Turnagain Arm, and so worth it for the hanging glaciers.
Turnagain Arm, Wildlife Center & Glaciers: Small-Group Tour - only 14 guests, a local driver and Beluga Point, which I adore!
Alaska Wildlife Day Tour with Free Hotel Pickup - the easy afternoon option when you would rather not drive.
The question visitors always asked me at the gate was where the bears would be. My answer was to ask the centre's staff that morning, because they know the day's pattern better than any guidebook.
North of the City, Near Eagle River
I have a soft spot for sleeping outside the centre when the plan is outdoors. You wake closer to the trails and further from the traffic.
Alaska Native Heritage Center - a thoughtful morning, and about 12 miles from the Eagle River hotel below.
Freelance Outdoor Adventures - an 8-minute walk from the same door, handy for a gear-and-guide day.

Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Eagle River/Anchorage Are
2 starsEagle River Microtel - my pick for the Eagle River side, with a work desk, free WiFi and a tea maker in every room plus a pancake-and-fruit continental breakfast, and you trade downtown for a drive of about 20 miles from the airport (Booking.com ↗).
Glaciers, Rails and Long Roads
Spend your savings on one big day out, and make it a glacier.
Matanuska Glacier Hike Day Tour - two hours each way and a walk among seracs and crevasses, which is a must for the camera!
Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward Round Trip - a same-day return from the Anchorage Depot along Turnagain Arm, and the lazy person's scenic drive.
Portage Glacier Cruise and Wildlife Explorer Tour - a cruise to the glacier face with a Park Service ranger, so ask that ranger what the ice has been doing lately.
A Bed for the Trail-Minded
When the budget is tight and the boots are by the door, a hostel is hard to beat.
EBIKE - Wilderness Trails of Anchorage - a peddle-assisted ride along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, gentle and so much fun!

Base Camp Anchorage Hostel
8.8 Fabulous367 reviewsBase Camp Anchorage Hostel - my pick for the cheapest bed, with a shared kitchen, an outdoor fireplace and bike hire, and you share bathrooms in return (Tripadvisor ↗).
What I Check Before Booking
When I carried a radio on patrol, I learned that a steady connection and a warm bed matter more than a view.
I look for free Wi-Fi, parking, a way in from the airport and somewhere to make tea. For a cheap stay, that list is enough!
I browse the hotels in Anchorage listings the same way before I choose.
Go and Find Your Own Favourites
These are my four little addresses, and I hope they serve you as well as they would serve me.
Wander a little, ask the staff at each stop what the day looks like, and keep your own list. You can compare more Anchorage hotels too. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
