Best Practices For Safely Working Outside In Warm Climates
Working outdoors when it’s hot can create an array of safety challenges that surveying and geospatial professionals need to be aware of and plan for.
The newest entry to the Geoprofessional Business Association’s (GBA) GBA Best Practices series of monographs addresses key issues to plan for, including sun and UV-ray exposure, heat, Lyme Disease and other tick-borne diseases, West Nile Virus, and poison ivy and related plants. Each issue is expanded upon by GBA’s Construction-Materials Engineering and Testing Business Council and its Safety Committee, which offers appropriate preventative measures.
“Working outdoors in hot weather exposes people to a variety of risks. Most of these are known risks, so it’s fairly easy to find effective guidance on what to do and not do to maintain personal safety. We’re grateful to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration for providing so many supporting documents. We are grateful, too, to the many GBA-Member Firm safety directors who contributed experience-based insights and suggestions,” says GBA Safety Committee Chair Randy A. Knott.
The project was initiated specifically for Construction-Materials Engineering and Testing (CoMET) field personnel, but soon after it was established, the group realized that just about all members could benefit, according to Saad M. Hineidi, CoMET business council chair.
