At a press conference at INTERGEO 2012 on Oct. 10, Topcon Positioning Systems discussed some of its most recent innovations, including the TopNET Live GNSS network and its Vanguard technology, a 226-channel application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed to track all current and upcoming GNSS constellations and signals with superior performance, accuracy and sensitivity.

However, the emphasis of the press conference was on the IP-S2 mobile mapping system. And for good reason—the company estimated that mobile mapping is a $5 billion business currently, with substantial room for growth. “Why would you put something on a tripod when you can drive past it?” was the question posed to the audience. Topcon said it’s planning to release a compact, updated version of the IP-S2 later this year.
