By James McAndrews Jr. Edgar Harold Annear's life was short, his achievements still affect the lives of residents. His work as surveyor of Stanislaus County would see him lay out and pave many of the county's roads, and he would oversee the construction of the Seventh Street Bridge as well.

The Ceres native was born Dec. 30, 1884. He went to school in his hometown until he was ready to attend high school. Ceres didn't have one, so he attended Modesto High. He studied engineering for several years at the University of California at Berkeley but left when he was appointed by Rep. James Needham to the Military Academy at West Point.

Annear did not graduate. He was "compelled to give it up at the end of a year because of the prolonged illness of his father."
