Fast, Accurate Positioning Technology Can Help Contractors Win More Projects

Norcross, Ga. - For contractors competing for infrastructure projects funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, the challenge is clear: bid competitively enough to win the contract while maintaining healthy profit margins on the project.

To help firms meet this challenge, Leica Geosystems has assigned a special task force to support contractors, surveyors, and engineers bidding or working on large infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, airports, and power plants.

“Our technologies and experience enable us to address every cost, design, construction, and risk issue for owners, design/builders, contractors, engineers, public/private partnerships, and government agencies,” says Gerard Manley, Vice President of Engineered Solutions.

Leica Geosystems offers a broad portfolio of positioning solutions for every stage of an infrastructure project. For example, the company’s monitoring systems, total stations, and GNSS/GPS systems capture, analyze, model, visualize, and present spatial information.

According to Manley, rapid and accurate scanning, mapping, monitoring, and surveying of job sites and structures with the precision Leica Geosystems instruments can help firms win more ARRA contract awards - and make more money from them.

“By providing the right geotechnical positioning systems and engineering support, Leica Geosystems can help contractors reduce project costs all around - from lower materials and labor, to eliminating costly reworks by measuring the job right the first time,” he notes.

On a dam rehabilitation project in northern California, Leica Geosystems robotic total stations cut survey and monitoring costs approximately 40% vs. sight-lining GPS/RTK, says Manley. “Obviously, the savings in time and labor on a fixed-price contract goes directly to the contractor’s bottom-line profits.”

Leica Geosystems also provides a full line of construction levels, lasers and machine control systems for the construction phase. According to Manley, one construction firm achieved savings of approximately $100,000 in surveying, backfilling, grading, and compacting costs on a large pond project by using a bulldozer equipped with a Leica Geosystems GPS 3D system.

“President Obama himself has personally mandated that federally funded infrastructure projects be built economically, stating: ‘We can’t just fall into the old Washington habit of throwing money at a problem,’” says Manley. “By preventing errors and reducing costs, Leica Geosystems can save you money, giving you a big competitive advantage over other bidders.”

Construction and engineering professionals are invited to attend a free Leica Geosystems webcast, “Winning and Profiting from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Construction Projects.”
