Even with laser sighting, satellite positioning and a host of other surveying technologies, a hand-drawn map of Frederick from 1820 still guides city surveyor Bill Lankford in some cases.
The map is actually a reproduction of an even earlier map done in 1782 by Samuel Duvall, who first laid out Frederick 's streets.
"We have to be aware of how the old-timers did it," said Lankford, manager of surveying and mapping for the City of Frederick . "Just because our instrumentation is more accurate doesn't mean they are wrong. ... They set the lines."
