On Thursday, September 21, the University of New Hampshire, together with Keystone Precision Instruments and Trimble Navigation Ltd., will present a one-day opportunity to see, touch and use a wide variety of positioning technologies. This is a great opportunity to meet and talk with fellow professionals and the people designing future technologies. Many of the events will take place outdoors; the rain date is Friday, September 22, 2006.
Especially designed for a wide spectrum of users such as surveyors, contractors, ocean mappers, engineers, municipal planners, utility companies, indeed everyone into positioning and location can learn what's current and what's coming in the traditional, GPS, inertial guidance and other automated techniques.
Register for the field day, see future-ready GPS, magnetic levitation total stations, inertial guidance, graders and dozers shaping the earth on their own to 3D plans, three dimensional scanning. The General Registration Fee of $50.00 covers all day access to demonstrations, speaker's presentation area, parking and a bag lunch. Student registration is at no charge and lunch is included for those students who are pre-registered. Additionally, courses for CEU credits are being offered for $150.00. Sign up for more than one course and get $50.00 off the second course. Upon availability of seating, UNH faulty/staff and students who are interested in auditing a course without obtaining CEUs would have an opportunity to attend at course at no charge, but pre-registration is required.

- Course 1-GPS Static and Fast Static Network Design - 2 hours:
- Static GPS networks are not a thing of the past. Learn to design, process and adjust a GPS network in a manner that you will know that your results are correct. Instructor: Alan R. Dragoo, L.S. of Keystone Precision Instruments.
- Course 2-The National Spatial Reference System:
- Northings and Eastings or Latitudes and Longitudes, Decoding the Mystery of Coordinates - 2 hours: This presentation will cover the development of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the relationship of the various geographic, State Plane, UTM and Cartesian coordinate systems to one another. Co-Instructors: Robert G. Moynihan P.E., L.L.S. of Professor of Civil Technology/Surveying and Mapping at UNH's Thompson School of Applied Science and Mr. Curtis Crowe, Geodetic Advisor at NOAA's National Geodetic Survey office.
- Course 3-Data Collection Review, Benefits of Robotics, Reflectorless, and Win CE Pocket PC Data Collection - 2 hours:
- This course will explore the intimate details of effective data collection using state of the art technology. A variety of data loggers and sensing equipment wil be covered. Instructor: Ray Kerwin of Tripod Data Systems.
- Course 4-Current Use and Future Trends in the Online Processing Utility Service (OPUS) - 2 hours:
- OPUS, the National Geodetic Survey's Online Positioning User Service, is an automated program whereby NGS will process user's dual frequency GPS observations and return positions referenced to the North American Datum of 1983 and the International Terrestrial Reference System of 2000. Topics include the purpose of OPUS, Practical Applications in Surveying and Its Future. Instructor: Peter Lazio, L.S. of Sydney B. Browne and Son, LLP.
- Course 5-From Photo to Land Use Data - 2 hours:
- Current land use mappers have access to high quality, high-resolution color imagery - acquired via aircraft or satellite - as primary data sources. Land use trends require this incorporation of historic, unprocessed, aerial photography. Topics include Aquisition, Scanning, Ortho-rectifying and Interpreting Aerial Photos for Use in AGIS. Instructor: Fay Rubin, Project Director of Complex Systems Research Center at UNH.
- Course 6-Application of ESRI's ArcPad GIS with a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA): A Functional Approach - 2 hours:
- The presentation gives a functional approach by bringing you full circle as you view the process of preparing and uploading data layers from a desktop GIS database to a PDA, collect new GPS points, correct GIS data layers in hand, and synchronizing a desktop GIS with newly made changes from the field. Co-Instructors: Michael Routhier, Laboratory Manager, Complex Systems Research Center, UNH and Robert Anderson, Systems Programmer, Research Computing Group, UNH.
- Course 7-GIS Surveyors Hands-on GIS Workshop -4 hours:
- This four hour course provides surveyors background information in GIS business opportunities, highlights the value of survey data in the GIS process, and engages surveyors in dialog about integrating GIS into their business practices. Co-Instructors: Brent A. Jones, PE, PLS, Survey Industry Manager of ESRI and Mark Scott of ESRI.
