Global Marketing Insights, Inc. has completed the study entitled "Survey and Analysis of Remote Sensing Market, Aerial and Spaceborne" and delivered the final report to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Satellite and Information Service Division.

NOAA has accepted the final report and posted it as a PDF for downloading by the public at www.licensing.NOAA.gov. Global Marketing Insights has also made the report available at www.globalinsights.com.

The NOAA Satellite and Information Service Division contracted Global Marketing Insights to conduct a research study of the international remote sensing market as it relates to aerial and satellite data technologies. Global Marketing Insights created a series of extensive online surveys covering issues related to eight sectors of the remote sensing market: aerial film, aerial digital, aerial sensors, satellites, commercial end users, value added hardware and software, academic, and government. These surveys were completed by geospatial industry professionals and end users worldwide between February and August 2005.

"NOAA's primary goal for the survey was to learn about the technological, political, economic and environmental trends impacting each of those sectors," said Dr. Shawana Johnson, President of Global Marketing Insights. "The survey results provide insights into where the worldwide remote sensing market is heading - from the viewpoints of both data and service providers and end users."

To receive the worldwide input needed to make the survey a success, Global Marketing Insights established an international network of 26 Alliance Research Partners that hosted the website for the surveys and encouraged their clients to participate in the online survey. Ultimately, 1,547 online surveys were completed, as well as, 250 in-depth personal interviews recorded. Over 2000 pages of statistics were generated from the data collected. The final report was based on the specific requirements and analysis required by NOAA.

"In addition to the specific trend analysis report requested by NOAA, there is literally a treasure-trove of statistical data relating revenues and technological needs of remote sensing users," said Johnson. "NOAA has taken the extraordinary step of allowing Global Marketing Insights to retain the raw data and perform further customized market analysis for clients."

Participants in all segments of the geospatial industry will find valuable market insight in the Survey and Analysis of Remote Sensing Market report. Some of these trends and insights include:

  • U.S. and Canadian users see Homeland Security and Defense issues as driving future technological development;
  • In Europe, the development of the European Union will dictate the remote sensing sector progress;
  • Asian and African participants believe that remote sensing data becoming more commoditized will allow them greater access;
  • The U.S. aerial imaging sectors expect strong growth with the continuation mergers and acquisitions, consolidating in larger companies;
  • Internationally, growth in the aerial mapping sector will continue to occur within small companies.
"I was pleased to discover the worldwide interest and expanding business opportunities for remote sensing data," said Kay E. Weston, Chief, Satellite Activities Branch, International and Interagency Affairs within the NOAA Satellite and Information Services Division. "I think this bodes well for the future of the commercial remote sensing industry."
