The New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors Inc. presented Robert Smith, LS, with the Meritorious Service Award at the association's 47th annual surveyors conference and exposition at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY on January 20.

The NYSAPLS Meritorious Service Award recognizes an individual who demonstrates a significant commitment to the improvement of their community. Smith is vice president of SHW&S Land Surveyors, P.C., a surveying firm in Southampton, and has been a member of NYSAPLS for more than 25 years. He served as NYSAPLS president in 2002-4 and also served as regional president of the Nassau-Suffolk Civil Engineers, Inc.

"Having worked closely with Bob over the past ten years, I have come to know him as an individual dedicated to his profession and the public he serves," said Daren L. Morgan, LS, NYSAPLS president. "NYSAPLS could not have chosen a more deserving individual for this prestigious award."

Shortly after high school, Smith entered the surveying profession in 1964 and was licensed in 1976. He was a self-employed surveyor from 1976-1980 when he became a partner of Squires, Holden & Weisenbacher.
