A Virginia group of state agencies and universities, The Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN), have purchased a digital statewide satellite image map from SPOT Image Corporation, Reston, Va.

VGIN provides this map as a planning, management and educational tool. The digital map is accessible at www.vgin.vipnet.org to all state and local government agencies and the Virginia educational system. The image map, created from 10-meter resolution imagery, is detailed enough to clearly see roads, buildings, land cover types and provides an up-to-date view of the entire state.

The Virginia statewide map is part of the nationwide mapping program, SPOT USA Select. Other states participating in the program include California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia.
