ESRI, Redlands, Calif., ERDAS, Atlanta, Ga., and NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS), Montana, created a joint venture to provide professional geographic imaging software available to every public school child and teacher in grades K-12 in the entire state of Montana. The project is called the GIS-4-Montana Education Initiative.

ESRI provided ArcView GIS for the schools, which is a GIS software that provides data visualization, query, analysis and much more. ERDAS provided ArcView Image Analysis extension to generate information from the satellite imagery and aerial photography. EOS obtained support from Montana’s GIS professional community and donated the statewide ArcView license to Montana’s public school systems.

GIS-4-Montana is the first of its kind in the United States. It is being used as a role model for other states.
