Design and construction firms were awarded nearly $36 billion in new contracts by state departments of transportation for highway and bridge projects in Fiscal Year 2001 (July 2000-June 2001 for most states). Both design and construction firms saw significant increases in the dollar value of new contract awards in the past year according to a new report from ZweigWhite, The 2001-2004 State DOT Market for Design & Construction Firms. Based on data collected from each state department of transportation, new awards to design and environmental consulting firms topped $3 billion in FY 2001, a 15 percent increase from FY 2000. New bid awards to contractors by state DOTs increased by 8.3 percent in FY 2001, surpassing $32.5 billion.
