The U.S. Department of Transportation will be holding the second national work zone awareness week, "Enhancing Safety and Mobility in Work Zones," on April 9-12, 2001, in Washington, D.C. A forum will be held to discuss work zone safety by the highway safety community for workers, drivers and pedestrians. In addition, a special memorial dedicated to the 868 people who were killed in work zone related accidents in 1999 will be held on the April 9, 2001. The awareness week was established as a collaborative effort from the American Traffic Safety Services Association, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and the Federal Highway Administration.
