World’s first handheld laser measuring tool celebrates tenth anniversary.

DISTO, the first name in portable laser measuring tools, celebrates its tenth anniversary next month.

On November 3, 1993, Leica Geosystems rocked the industry with the introduction of the world’s first-ever handheld laser measuring device at the BATIMAT trade fair in France.

The DISTO family of products, now in its fifth-generation of technology, offers unprecedented convenience and accuracy for measuring. With DISTO, users can quickly measure distances, areas and volumes with accuracy of up to 1.5 mm (1/16-in) at ranges of over 100 m (330 ft), with simple point-and-click operation.

Since its introduction to the world market at the end of 1993, DISTO has gathered many accolades and awards, including the Gold Medal at the 1995 BATIMAT show, the Silver Medal at the 1998 Equip Baie event in France and most recently the Gold Medal at the 2003 BUDMA fair in Poland. The products have won a loyal following among architects, builders, floor and ceiling contractors, painters, HVAC and plumbing contractors, facility managers, insurance adjustors, real estate agents, law enforcement officers and a wide range of other users. In 2003, DISTO was voted the best tool for floor layers in the United Kingdom.

The fifth-generation DISTO product line includes the entry-level DISTO Lite5 and the DISTO Classic5 performance model. The compact lightweight DISTO Lite5 has an ergonomic keypad and large clear backlit display, making it very easy to learn and use. The unit includes a built-in leveling bubble and alignment aid to mark measured points. DISTO Classic5 includes a built-in 2x telescopic viewer and leveling bubble, and an integrated calculator and indirect height and distance (Pythagoras) measurement functions. It stores the last 15 measured values plus up to 10 additional constants, such as ceiling heights, for faster measurements of areas and volumes. The multifunctional end piece facilitates measurements from flat surfaces and corners.

For professionals requiring the utmost in accuracy and functionality, Leica Geosystems continues to offer the DISTO Pro4 series with top-of-the-line features such as data storage, RS232 data transfer, alphanumeric keypad, graphics display, specialized PC software and comprehensive trigonometric calculation functions. The DISTO Pro4a provides accuracy levels to 1.5 mm (1/16-in).

The DISTO products are sold through an extensive network of distributors and dealers throughout North America. Buyers can also select, specify and purchase products directly online at
