Keynote speaker is the current Acting Dominion Hydrographer and Director General of the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

CARIS 2003 Conference committee is delighted to announce its opening Keynote Speaker – Mr. Denis Hains. Hosted in St. Louis, Missouri, USA the Educational Sessions will be held November 18-19 with Conference Sessions to follow November 20-21.

Mr. Hains has been appointed as Acting Dominion Hydrographer and Director General of the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in October 2002.

Previously he was Director General of the Audit and Evaluation Branch, in Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), for two years. He has had broad experience in the delivery of operational programs to Canadians, in a regional environment with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans more recently with the Earth Sciences Sector and Audit and Evaluation of NRCan.

Hains has extensive experience in hydrography as well as in sciences, research and development related to geomatics/geodesy with Geomatics Canada. He has led regional, national, as well as international initiatives.
