EarthData Holdings, Washington, D.C., purchased ISTAR Americas Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of ISTAR SA of France. ISTAR Mapping Services, together with the group’s newly commercialized radar service, GeoSAR Mapping Services, broadens EarthData’s ability to provide clients with the most advanced solutions for their geospatial needs. Most of ISTAR America’s employees accepted posts with EarthData and will be working in business development, processing and program management, which will ensure a smooth transition of the technology.

Solid Terrain Modeling (STM), Fillmore, Calif., added three new resellers in Spain, Ohio and Oregon. They include Anhidra Consultoria of Lleida, Spain; Worldfx Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Intervision of Eugene, Oregon.

Surveying And Mapping Inc. (SAM Inc.), Austin, Texas, opened its Dallas office in response to the growing demand for the company’s integrated approach to land surveying, aerial mapping, GIS and subsurface utility engineering services. Mickey Nowell, RPLS, joined SAM Inc. as vice president and oversees all aspects of the new Dallas office. David Dallas is the new office’s senior project manager.

Herbert, Rowland & Grubic Inc. (HRG) announced that Eric M. Orndorff has been hired as the GPS specialty service group manager. He has nearly 10 years of experience collecting field data using the Global Positioning System, providing survey and aerial ground control and preparing survey base plans from field data. Orndorff received his Master of Science in Surveying and Mapping from the University of Florida.

Kirk McClurkin joined Woolpert LLP, Dayton, Ohio, in its Virginia Beach, Va., office as a senior project manager. McClurkin manages projects for local and federal government clients in the Virginia area. McClurkin is an expert in GIS and asset management integration with experience in photogrammetry, surveying/GPS, utility and transportation services. Alan Ruot joined Woolpert LLP’s Denver office as a GIS project manager. Ruot helps define vision and strategy for clients, as well as organize the resources needed to execute the strategy. He is responsible for project completion and quality.

NavCom Technology Inc., Redondo Beach, Calif., signed a sales representation and distribution agreement with Navtech Seminars & GPS Supply Company, Alexandria, Va., to make NavCom’s line of high-quality, high-accuracy StarFire dual-frequency GPS receivers more widely available throughout North America. Navtech Seminars & GPS Supply has been a supplier of GPS educational services since 1984, offering more than 20 technical short courses on GPS operations, integration and applications. Also, NavCom added AD Navigation AS of Norway to its global network of dealers. AD Navigation is an authorized representative for NavCom products and services in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

The Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California (CELSOC) Association has selected RBF Consulting's (RBF) Irvine Lake Storage Survey Project as recipient of the "2003 Engineering Excellence Merit" Award. In June of 2002, the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) requested RBF to compile a topographic and bathymetric survey of the 700-acre Irvine Lake in the County of Orange, California. The RBF team established a horizontal and vertical control network to arrange the various project elements to assemble mapping of the lake including, hydrographic survey data, aerial topography and conventional topographic surveys.

Clary & Associates Inc., Jacksonville, Fla., is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year (2003). Greg Clary started the company in 1983 by opening an office on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville with seven employees. Today forty employees work at the company’s corporate headquarters, a 6,500 square foot office building on Crown Point Road in Mandarin. Today the company provides Subdivision Surveying & Platting, GPS Surveys, Transportation Design & Right of Way Surveys, Topographical Surveys, Condominium Surveys, Subsurface Utility Designation and Vacuum Excavation, and Geographic Information System (GIS) Services.

Also, Clary & Associates Inc. named Vicki Shelley senior administrative assistant. Shelley serves as administrative assistant to Sue Scull, vice president of administration. Shelley’s responsibilities include coordinating the Clary Client Access System, accounts payable, accounts receivable and a variety of other administrative duties.

Also, Clary & Associates Inc. announced that Dennis Elswick was promoted to executive vice president. Elswick’s project management work includes design and right-of-way surveys for many state roads. He works extensively with the Florida Department of Transportation, numerous government agencies and a variety of engineering and architectural firms. Elswick joined Clary & Associates in 1989. Elswick is licensed in the states of Florida and Mississippi. He is a member of the Florida Engineering Society and the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping.

TVGA Consultants (TVGA), Buffalo, N.Y., was commended by the New York State Association of Consulting Engineers (NYACE) with a Gold Award for Excellence for their role in the reconstruction of a 1.25-mile corridor section of Hertel Avenue and for their role in the addition and rehabilitation of the section of Interstate 90 of the New York State Thruway between Interchanges 53 and 54. The NYACE Engineering Excellence Awards Program recognizes engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity.

PCI Geomatics, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, welcomed Hong Kong Geomatics Consultants Ltd. as its newest official reseller of PCI Geomatics earth observation-based geomatics software solutions for the Hong Kong and Macau regions. Hong Kong Geomatics Consultants Ltd. specializes in GIS, remote sensing and photogrammetry business operations, and has its head office located in Hong Kong.

Avatech Solutions, Owings Mills, Md., appointed Eric Pratt as its president and chief operating officer. Pratt's most recent position was vice president of business development at Sonus Networks Inc. Prior to the merger between Sonus and Telecom Technologies Inc. (TTI), Pratt served as executive vice president - sales, marketing and professional services division at TTI and oversaw the $800 million merger of the two companies. Leveraging his combination of leadership, sales and marketing, and engineering skills, Pratt will work to establish Avatech as a major provider in the PLM market.
