THE INITIAL POINT was the first point surveyed in Oklahoma from which all lands in the state were laid out. It was established in 1870 by GLO surveyor E.N. Darling and still remains to this day. It sets on a hill just south of what was Fort Arbuckle in the southern part of the state. There are still remnants of the original reference tree next to the monument.
