A Brief HistoryIn 1955, E.S. Holman, an engineering graduate from the University of Tennessee and former Marine, opened Holman's Homesteads with his wife, Mary. Holman's Homesteads provided property owners with maps, guns, knives and rock picks. In 1965, the Holmans branded the store as Holman's House of Maps, expanding with items that included technical books, drafting items and construction instruments.
In 1966, a young man from Albuquerque aspiring to be a civil engineer sought work as a draftsman. He was familiar with Holman's as a source for supplies. As an interim measure in his job search, he took a position at the store as a sales clerk. He found that he liked the technical atmosphere and interaction with customers. The years passed by, and 39 years later that sales clerk, Tony Trujillo, is president and primary shareholder of Holman's.
Transitions Along the WayTo meet the needs of rapidly expanding business in Albuquerque, the company moved to a new location in 1995 at the northern edge of urban expansion. In 1996, Holman's opened a second store in Tempe, Ariz., that focuses on CAD and survey instruments. It is currently managed by Trujillo's oldest son, Anthony, the company's vice president, CAD/Survey division. The company also has a facility in Tucson.
Trujillo Sr. has propelled Holman's to success by focusing on the importance of relationships. As a dealer, Holman's is essentially the middleman between technology manufacturers and end users. Trujillo's philosophy revolves around exceeding expectations of both customers and suppliers with superior service. "The strength of Holman's," says Will Barham Sr., vice president and shareholder, "lies in its people-both customers and staff."
For Holman's suppliers, it means leveraging sales opportunities, and expanding markets for existing and newly developed products. As a dealer for three industry leading technology companies-Topcon, Hewlett-Packard and Apple Computing-Holman's has performed admirably over the years.
