I often hear surveyors complain about the negative perception surveying has in the minds of the general public. Someone recently forwarded me this link to a video clip on Seattle’s King5, and I was encouraged to see that it portrays surveyors in a positive light-as individuals on the cutting edge of technological innovation.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a big proponent of 3D laser scanning. Interestingly, WSDOT has devoted an entire portion of its Web site to a discussion of photogrammetry and remote sensing technology-including a sizable section on laser scanning.

This makes me wonder: Will state transportation departments end up driving more widespread adoption of this technology? Or are they simply riding on the coattails of other surveyors?
