Michael G. "Mickey" Shackelford, PLS, works in private practice near Chicago. He is a member of the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association, a Fellow Member of ACSM, and a Life Member of the Surveyors Historical Society. He served on the Board of Directors for ACSM from the National Society of Professional Surveyors for two terms, and
is a past president of the Surveyors Historical Society.
As land surveyors, we are often faced with the need to know something about the history of our profession, the instruments once used, the surveyors who once used them and certainly the history of the land we have been hired to survey. Yet how far back must our knowledge extend?
