National Surveyors Week: How Will You Celebrate?

March 6, 2013

On March 17-23, surveyors around the nation will celebrate National Surveyors Week, a week set aside by the profession to promote public recognition of surveying and honor the role surveyors play in the nation’s economy.

According to a press release issued by the NSPS, there are more than 45,000 professional surveyors in the U.S. today. Hundreds of surveyors across the nation will participate in National Surveyors Week activities that highlight both surveyors’ contributions throughout history and the new technologies that are influencing the future direction of the profession. Although events are primarily happening at a local and state level, the NSPS has petitioned President Obama to issue a proclamation designating the week of March 17-23, 2013, as National Surveyors Week.

The week will kick off with GPS Day on Saturday, March 16, an event designed to engage the public in one of the largest, simultaneous collections of GPS data at sites throughout the United States. State societies are encouraging their members to check with chapter presidents to find GPS Day events and other activities in their area.

NCEES is advocating that surveyors to take advantage of the opportunity promote their profession to students. The organization has developed a Speakers Kit for Surveyors to help them explain the licensure process.

Additionally, the NSPS has made available a publicity handbook to help with organizing and promoting events.
