Point of Beginning

What Bryan did this weekend...

I'm in the middle of an independent study project that I'm doing as a part of my degree program. The idea is to recover PLSS corners in areas that are sorely lacking in CCRs, to learn how to collect and process GPS data, and to perpetuate the location of original stones. My work is being reviewed by 2 Surveyors, one of whom is a regular poster on this board.

Now that we have that out of the way...

This area is in SE Oklahoma. 7N18E to be precise. I had expected to find a few stones this weekend, but ended up finding 5. I also visited the pipe and cap monument at the township corner. I'm still working through a few problems with processing GPS data... since the conditions for observation are so terrible, but I'm thinking that with some help, I'll learn how to edit the bad stuff out and get a decent file. I also had a few problems with old batteries that are running older units, they were dying after about 2 hours... one of them lasted 6 hours before it quit. I had left that unit up all night collecting data.

So with no further ado, here are the photos. The helper is my 10 year old daughter, Alyssa.

The first stone I found was no even in the township I was heading for, but fortunately, the lease road I was following to get there was laid north of the section line, and this stone was preserved.
