PRICE OF FLOOD WORK SKYROCKETS

Belmond Independent- Should the City of Belmond spend $50,000 -- money it doesn't have -- to study flooding in the community? That was the question before the city council Monday night.

City officials have been talking about ways to prevent flooding ever since the disaster last June. In August the council voted to have a small flood survey prepared at a cost of about $8,000.

This past January, Bill Douglass of Bolten and Menk Engineering presented that survey to the council, including some maps showing high water levels in 2008. He outlined several ideas that could help control future flooding. All totalled, those ideas had an estimated price tag of $3.5 million.
