KALAMAZOO -- Nearly every morning, Robert Snell comes punctually into the office, dressed in a coat and tie.

The 84-year-old hasn't gotten paid in months -- he's officially retired from his employer, a Kalamazoo engineering office -- but it's a routine he can't give up.

Even Snell's former boss is a bit baffled by his status.

"It's kind of hard to tell if he's retired or not," said Rex Milliron, who runs the surveying department at the Kalamazoo office of Grand Rapids-based Prein & Newhof. "His work is his life."
