GRAND RAPIDS -- A life-size statue of city co-founder Lucius Lyon, donated by the family of Peter Secchia, was unveiled Wednesday in downtown Grand Rapids.

A short ceremony took place following comments at a gathering inside the nearby Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, where Amway co-founder Rich DeVos introduced Secchia.

The statue is the first in a series of 25 bronze sculptures being donated to the city as part of the Community Legends project funded and endowed by Secchia.

The sculpture created by artist Stuart Williamson has been installed at the southwest corner of Monroe Avenue and Lyon Street, near the hotel. Lyon Street was named for Lucius Lyon.

"To my knowledge, we have not yet recognized all that Lucius Lyon contributed," City Manager Kurt Kimball said before the unveiling. ...
