DeLorme Introduces Topo USA® 7.0 with Updated Maps, Unrivaled Aerial Imagery and GPS Features

December 4, 2007
NOAA Nautical Charts, Photo GeoTagging, Improved Geocaching, and More

YARMOUTH, Maine"•DeLorme, the innovation leader in mapping and GPS technology, today introduced Topo USA® 7.0, with significant new detail, plus aerial imagery, nautical charts, and GPS features unavailable in other software programs.

The detail includes over 3 million new or updated roads, more than four million places of interest from the DeLorme Street Atlas USA® 2008 database, and 40,000 locations from the renowned DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer™ series of topographic map books.

Along with the new detail and datasets, users will find new photo GeoTagging, superior geocaching support, plus unique support for popular GPS wrist computers.

Available Imagery and Datasets

Users will be able to access six types of map, chart, and aerial imagery downloads. New options include color aerial imagery, NOAA nautical charts, and USGS high resolution city imagery. The previously available USGS 1:24,000 quads, USGS black and white aerial, and 10-meter color satellite imagery options remain.

Topo USA 7.0 data offers the most up-to-date topographic, road, and trail data available,” said Caleb Mason, Director of Marketing at DeLorme.

“However, we believe that the more types of map and imagery options you have available, the more successful your travel planning and navigation will be. With six different types of maps and imagery, we offer by far the widest range of options available for topographic map users.”

Users will be able to display and GPS track on routes on any of the different types of map, imagery, and chart datasets (see NOAA chart illustration).

DeLorme makes the additional datasets available via the Topo USA software’s NetLink tab (Internet access required). Users will find a certificate for $100 in Data Download Dollars in their Topo USA 7.0 package.

Unrivaled GPS capabilities

GPS users will find a wide array of synergies when teaming Topo USA 7.0 with their handheld receiver. Routes, waypoints, and tracks can be created for easy upload to popular NMEA-compliant receivers from DeLorme, GARMIN, Magellan, and other manufacturers. Waypoints and tracks collected in the field can be imported with names and comments, and tracks can be saved as routable roads or trails - an exclusive Topo USA capability.

GeoTag the Precise Location of Digital Photos

Now, users can show the exact spot where they took digital photos, as long as they record a GPS track for their travels.

Topo USA 7.0 associates the digital photo’s timestamp with the precise date and time data collected by the receiver to zero in and apply the GeoTag.

This capability is obviously ideal for professional photographers, but it’s also an ideal way for anyone to help preserve the memories from their outdoor adventures.

Gain a Key Geocaching Advantage

For geocachers, importing .gpx and .loc files with Topo USA is nothing new. Now, however, .gpx files are automatically imported with full cache descriptions and hints intact. For .loc file users, Topo USA 7.0 enables easy cut-and-paste of extended descriptions and hints into the waypoint comment field.

Other map software programs truncate the geocache descriptions with low character counts. With Topo USA 7.0, geocachers can organize and plan their searches with the most complete information and most detailed maps available.

Support for Popular GPS Wrist Computers

In addition, Topo USA 7.0 supports GPS wrist computers from GARMIN, Suunto, and Timex. Trail runners, mountain bikers, hikers, climbers, and others can display their speed, cadence, and heart rate against a precise elevation profile. With this capability, they can focus on key aspects of their training or skills, to improve overall performance.

Also new in Topo USA 7.0 is the addition of routing selection to provide estimated time for bicycling trips (in addition to driving and hiking); and, access to the new eartha.com online community, for sharing photos, GPS files, and more with like-minded individuals. (See www.eartha.com for more.)

Additional features, either pioneered by or still exclusive to Topo USA, include realistic 3-D with flyovers, automatic road and trail routing, and tiled mosaic printing (2 x 2 or 3 x 3, at page sizes ranging from 8.5 x 11 to 11 x 17). A full range of map editing capabilities are also included.

For owners of the DeLorme Earthmate® GPS PN-20 handheld receiver, Topo USA 7.0 will seamlessly replace the 6.0 version that came with the device and also provide pre-cut maps for easy transfer to an SD card. Topo USA 7.0 is available at better outdoor and electronics stores, and at online sites that offer maps and GPS products. Suggested retail pricing is $99.95 for full U.S. coverage. Where available, East and West editions can be purchased at a suggested retail price of $49.95.
