SPOT 5 Satellite Testing Begins

May 14, 2001
Weekly update

SPOT Image Corporation, Reston, Va., began a satellite testing and qualification period for SPOT 5, a commercial imaging satellite. The testing period will extend until the actual launch of the satellite in the first quarter of 2002.

SPOT 5 will produce three types of imagery: Local/regional scale imagery will provide 2.5 and 5 meter resolution in black and white mode and will have coverage areas of up to 120 x 120 km of any location on Earth. Global scale imagery will give daily Earth coverage at 1 km resolution, while global terrain elevation will produce digital elevation models (DEM) from stereo-sensors.

SPOT 5 will be the upgrade to the SPOT USA Select series, which provides statewide digital satellite image maps.
