Preparations Underway for ESRI's 22nd Annual International User Conference 04.19.2002

April 19, 2002
Nearly 1,000 papers will be presented at the world's largest GIS gathering.

ESRI announces that its 22nd Annual International User Conference will be held July 8-12, 2002, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California, where more than 11,000 professionals will gather for five days at the world's largest geographic information system (GIS) conference.

Highlights include a keynote speech by Cynthia Moss, a naturalist and director of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, which she founded in 1972 at the Amboseli National Park in Kenya. Moss is the world-leading expert on the social organization of the African elephant, and her research has made a significant contribution to the conservation of elephants in Africa.

In addition, a large, special exhibition entitled "My Community, Our Earth: A Global Showcase of GIS and Sustainable Development" will be a primary conference feature. It will include the work of a variety of international agencies using GIS as well as the maps of students participating in the My Community, Our Earth project. The exhibition will later be shipped to Johannesburg, South Africa, for display at the World Summit on Sustainable Development conference, which will convene later this summer.

Nearly 1,000 papers will be presented at the conference by users from around the world. These sessions address more than 30 industries and countless applications of GIS in real-world situations and annually comprise the most comprehensive presentation of GIS issues and applications in the world.

In addition, more than 2,000 people are expected to attend more than 30 preconference seminars in full- and half-day sessions, ranging in content from "The Role of GIS in Homeland Security" to "Spatial Analysis and GIS." Registration for these seminars is separate; please visit www.esri.com/preconference for more information.

The ESRI Education User Conference 2002 will also be staged prior to the international conference. This year, a special track will focus on the upcoming bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark expedition and the geospatial education and research activities associated with this important commemoration. Other activities include technical workshops, map presentations, and an exhibitor pavilion featuring an entire trade show with hundreds of professional associations, consulting and data firms, and hardware and software companies.
