KS Associates, a civil engineering and surveying firm based in Elyria, Ohio, acquired Matrix Engineering, a coastal engineering firm in business for 27 years.

KS Associates has formed a Coastal Engineering Group to provide engineering solutions for all types of waterfront and water-related infrastructure, helping clients plan, design and manage construction projects along Lake Erie and its tributaries. The group serves property owners, marina owners, port authorities, dock manufacturers, industrial owners and communities.

The group is led by former Matrix Engineering founder and President John S. Matricardi, P.E.  "We are delighted to bring John aboard as director of the new group. John brings an unprecedented level of expertise in marine-related infrastructure and will ensure continuity of service to Matrix clients throughout the acquisition,” said Lynn S. Miggins, P.E., president of KS Associates.

Matricardi is licensed in 19 states. He is responsible for the overall direction and project management of all KS Associates’ marine engineering projects. Matricardi has experience in hydrographic surveys, diving inspections, the preparation of permit applications, the preparation of design drawings, specifications and cost estimates, and construction management and inspection services.

In addition to his 27 years at Matrix Engineering, Matricardi held civil engineering positions for government agencies, including NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland; the U.S. Coast Guard’s Ninth District in Cleveland; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District in Buffalo, N.Y.; and Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

From beach restoration and erosion protection to public and private recreational facilities, the KS Associates Coastal Engineering Group can help clients implement sustainable, cost-effective solutions. Services include regulatory permitting, lakefront erosion protection, marine structural design, beach restoration, public/private waterfront structures, bulkheading/dredging, slope stabilization and retaining walls, sheet piling and hydrographic surveying, including submerged land lease surveys.
