This was a very controversial topic at one time on POB. Some of the early adopters were really put to the test. Big heated discussions about SPC's vs. Custom Projections.

Well, seems to me times have changed. Low distortion projections showing up all over the place in most states. NGS has published papers on how to do them.

I think they are here to stay and that SPC's with go the way of the dodo bird. UTM's stay very useful for large areas.  I keep all my basic data in ECEF (meters) so switching to any projection is just a few clicks on my computer.  Works for me.

Why have very large grid to ground variances for smaller areas when it's so easy and convenient not to.

Progress marches on for those willing to proceed!
