Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Selects Intergraph Incident Detection and Response Network

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Jan. 27, 2010 – The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) will deploy Intergraph's public safety solutions to advance incident prevention and response efforts on the state’s 545-mile toll-road system. The PTC’s Traffic Operations Center (TOC) will leverage Intergraph’s integrated public safety, incident management and reporting solutions to empower responders with reliable and up-to-date information for effective and efficient emergency response to turnpike incidents.

As part of an early warning incident detection and response network spanning the entire turnpike, TOC personnel will leverage Intergraph’s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and reporting solutions to effectively manage more than 400 calls and 11,000 radio transmissions per day for emergency fire, medical and state police services.  Additionally, the integrated system will also include Intergraph’s Business Intelligence solution which aids in generating reports, performing ad hoc data analysis, and turning information into actionable intelligence for enhanced decision-making.

“The PTC works tirelessly to prevent incidents on the turnpike. However, when an event does occur, we strive to respond in the most prompt and professional manner,” said Allen W. Baldwin, the PTC’s Director of Safety and Operations. “Intergraph’s solutions are well suited to meet our needs for a sophisticated, scalable system that provides our personnel with real-time, actionable information to prevent and respond to turnpike incidents.”

“Intergraph’s proven, scalable public safety and security solutions are deployed worldwide and are uniquely suited for large agencies, such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission,” said John K. Graham, president, Intergraph Security, Government & Infrastructure. “Now with Intergraph’s public safety solutions, PTC will benefit from an unparalleled level of communication and control, emergency response and advanced incident analytics to increase operational efficiencies to promote the safety of turnpike motorists.”

One in 12 people in the world is protected by Intergraph public safety and security solutions. Intergraph solutions protect the largest and most complex cities and government sites in the world.

About Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission maintains a 24 hours a day, 365 days a year Traffic Operations Center (TOC) located in its Harrisburg headquarters facility. Serving as the hub of all Turnpike communications, the TOC continuously monitors Turnpike activities via an extensive radio system. Roadway conditions, construction status and weather conditions are all monitored there. The TOC also serves as the focal point for all Turnpike incident management activities.

The TOC handles radio communications for Commission personnel, customers, State Police, tow trucks, and emergency fire and medical services. The Center is equipped with a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system designed to provide the Commission's radio operators with instantaneous access to the closest emergency services and to the State Police for any incident at any point on the Turnpike system. When a radio operator receives a call via radio, telephone, cellular *11, or emergency call box, the operator enters the reported located of the incident into the CAD system. The system responds immediately with all the information required to handle the situation.

The TOC is staffed with highly trained personnel who are ready and willing to assist motorists around the clock. A State Police corporal is on duty at all times along with Communications Duty Officers assigned to provide 24 hour management supervision of the Center. The Center's radio operators receive structured training, including communication and telephone skills, and sensitivity training. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission operates and maintains 545 miles of toll roads in the state. It oversees 62 fare-collection facilities, 16 operational service plazas (two others are temporarily closed) and 26 maintenance facilities. With 2,169 employees, it generated $701.6 million in annual gross toll revenue from 188.2 million vehicles in calendar 2009. Known as "America's First Superhighway," it opened Oct. 1, 1940.
