ELLSWORTH - The county commissioners recenty voted unanimously to support the efforts of a local surveyor working to preserve property markers along the rails to trails project stretching from Calais to Ellsworth.
V. Kelly Bellis, owner of Horizon Surveying in Ellsworth, first approached the commission last August after observing the destruction of concrete surveying monuments in the rail bed along the 85-mile stretch of railroad being converted to recreational use. The Calais Branch Corridor Rehabilitation and Downeast Sunrise Trail Project intends to preserve the rail line for possible future use while removing the iron rails and wood ties to create a recreational trail.
