Best Device to run Field Software on?

Ok, so as far as i'm aware you can run field application on a Laptop,a Palm and a DATA collector.

Laptop is best when handling at home, but i would guess it would be highly inconvenient if you're handling both the Total Station and the laptop at the same time. You could only use a laptop if you have a different person running the gun right?

Palm is more flexible and easy to carry and use on the spot. It may not be as rugged as the data collector but it's much cheaper and the only real drawback should be the lack of alphanumeric keypad i guess.

DATA Collector are rugged easy to carry and handle flexible, but they are highly priced.

So overall which way should i go? I'm just starting out and i need your suggestion based from your experience. Do you think that carrying out a laptop and using the gun at the same time would be wise? Do you think i should get a Palm instead of a Collector in order to save money? What's your opinion?
