A classic description from 1861 Texas

Posted By Kent McMillan on 1/11/2009 at 2:13 AM

Well, it just isn't every day that you see a call like the one in the set of field notes (that's Texas usage for "metes and bounds description") from June of 1861 that I'm looking at this evening.

The field notes describe a certain 600 ac. tract with the following calls identifying one of its corners:

a stone mound for the Northwest corner of Block No. 2 from which a bed of mound ants bears West 9 varas ...

Sure, it also recites a tie to several bearing trees, but that first call to the "bed of mound ants" is what wins the prize.

Best regards,
Kent McMillan, RPLS Austin TX
