Is it Surveying or something else?

Just what is surveying: Is it a branch of engineering or is it a field by itself? Around here it seems like we are competing more and more with the engineering community and our scope of services seem to be over lapping, especial with new fields/techniques opening up in GIS/GPS, 3D mapping, Erosion/Sediment. Even with the advent of GIS/GPS we seem to be facing competition in the field of property boundary retracement. A couple of years ago I was told by a professor of one of our ABET credit Surveying programs that he was telling his survey students that surveying is a dieing field and that they should maybe look to other areas: is he right, I hope not! So, I will ask the question again but a little different: Just what is Surveying?

Is it a field unto itself?

Is it a branch of engineering, liken to environmental & geotextual engineering are part of the civil field but with enough differences that it can somewhat stand on its on?

Or are we being consumed by the other professions?
