I happened upon two Rittenhouse--Potts survey compasses dated around 1797 and bought them both. One is the vernier type. They arrived today, and I am shocked at how beautiful these things are. My wife is not too excited, and come to think about it, I don't know anyone who is even remotely interested in the subject....so I posted here.. shucks.
I guess these things must be hard to find because I have been looking for one that was not broken for 10 years until I found these two in near perfect condition. Now if I can find a solar compass my "antique survey equipment purchase addiction" might wane.
