I got my start in surveying at a company that did a lot of rural boundary surveys. Everybody carried a compass in the field; you wouldn't think of going out without one.
A couple of years ago, I went from there to a firm that does mostly (but not exclusively) urban work. They didn't *own* a compass. My boss recently told me (in good humor) that "nobody" uses them except me... It got me wondering.
Let the unscientific poll begin.
