The small juniper had been stepped on by cows. It had been hit repeatedly by a fence gate.
He looked at the battered little shrub and saw the makings of great beauty.
He dug the juniper from the ground and brought it back to his 100-year-old home in one of southeast Fort Worth's more crime-ridden and struggling neighborhoods.
There, he set about training the juniper into a small piece of art.
