By CHARLES WHISENANT - The Arab TribuneMonday, October 27, 2008 10:49 AM CDT Preliminary engineering and survey work has begun on Arab's downtown bypass. If funding and other factors stay on schedule, construction on the bypass should begin in 2011. Surveyors were in Arab this week staking out portions of the bypass route, which was approved in 2004. Alabama Department of Transportation Division 1 Engineer Johnny Harris said the preliminary engineering work was approved by State DOT officials in September. "We are doing the field surveys so we can get to the final design of the project," he said. This phase includes field surveys, plan surveys and plan development, which includes identifying rights-of-way.
