Applanix Launches POSPac Marine 5.0 Software for More Accurate Marine Mapping and Surveying

LONDON, ENGLAND – OCEANOLOGY INTERNATIONAL 2008 – Applanix introduced today a new version of its industry leading Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-Aided Inertial post-processing software for marine mapping and surveying applications-the POSPac Marine 5.0 software. POSPac Marine 5.0, the latest addition to Applanix’s growing mobile mapping suite of software, features new patent pending Applanix software technology that can significantly increase the efficiency, accuracy, and robustness of mapping and surveying using GNSS on a Marine craft. It does so by using a combination of GPS network and inertial post-processing methods that work together to eliminate or reduce the restrictions currently associated with high accuracy GNSS positioning in a Marine environment.

The POSPac Marine 5.0 software includes an innovative module for using GPS network corrections. Based upon Trimble VRS technology, the Applanix SmartBase software can use the data logged from a network of public or private GPS reference stations to generate a set of GPS observables that correct for errors at the location of the remote receiver on the Marine craft. These, along with the rover receiver observables, are then post-processed with data from the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) using the new Applanix IN-Fusion technology to simultaneously solve for the GPS ambiguities and the position and orientation of the Marine craft. The Applanix SmartBase corrections ensure that the errors are significantly reduced anywhere within the network of receivers, meaning the correct GPS ambiguities can be quickly and reliably computed. The tight integration with the inertial data allows the software to recover from data outages in a very short timeframe.

These features mean that reliable decimeter level or better accuracy can be obtained from existing reference station networks without the need to set up a dedicated base station close to the project area. This has the benefit of reducing the expenditure of conducting a high-accuracy Marine survey.

"This is a major breakthrough for our marine mobile mapping customers. By utilizing a network of continuously operating reference stations (CORS), POSPac Marine customers can enjoy not only reduced costs and greater accuracy, but also significantly less complexity in the execution of their survey,” said Peter Canter, Director of Marine Products at Applanix.

Included in the Applanix SmartBase module is the ability to automatically download existing reference station data from the Internet. Up to 50 reference stations can be processed at a time, with a minimum of four recommended for redundancy and robustness. POSPac Marine 5.0 software also includes an all new Graphical User Interface (GUI) based on the Microsoft .NET architecture. POSPac Marine 5.0 supports all Applanix marine products and is available through the Applanix sales network.
