Sewall to Provide GIS Strategic Planning for State of Maine

The Maine Library of Geographic Information has selected James W. Sewall Company to update its 2002 GIS Strategic Plan to national standards and to design a statewide land records information system. The project, funded through a grant from the Federal Geographic Data Committee’s Cooperative Agreement Program and the Maine GeoLibrary Board, will bring the State’s GIS activities into alignment with the National States’ Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) Fifty States Initiative and unify the State’s approach to managing and distributing parcel data.

(Old Town, Maine-7 March 2008) The Maine Library of Geographic Information has selected James W. Sewall Company to update its 2002 GIS Strategic Plan to national standards and to design a statewide land records information system. The project, funded through a grant from the Federal Geographic Data Committee’s Cooperative Agreement Program and the Maine GeoLibrary Board, will bring the State’s GIS activities into alignment with the National States’ Geographic Information Council
(NSGIC) Fifty States Initiative and unify the State’s approach to managing and distributing parcel data.

Working with the Board and subcontractors Reference Standard (Cambridge, MA), Somers-St. Claire GIS Management Consultants (Fairfax, VA), and Fairview Industries (Pendleton, SC), Sewall will conduct both the strategic planning and land records system research in parallel, coordinating stakeholder meetings, information-gathering forums, and surveys across the State to identify critical GIS needs and objectives.
This information will form the basis of the updated plan and the functional framework and specifications for the parcel system.

Dr. James Page, CEO of Sewall, states, “Maine is known as an early adopter of GIS. Developing a sustainable infrastructure is a significant next step and will assist the State in providing better, more efficient service to our citizens. We are excited to be a part of this process.”
