Survey and Mapping Data aides DOT in Dangerous Rockfall Zone

ALBUQUERQUE, NM, February 14, 2008 – Wilson & Company, Inc., Engineers & Architects (Wilson & Company) was recently honored with an Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Mexico for the US Highway 82 Project owned by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT).  Wilson & Company was the primary consultant in charge of surveying and mapping services.

In southern New Mexico, just east of the City of Alamogordo, US Highway 82 winds up the steep western face of the Sacramento Mountains. Rock falls have been a serious issue since the highway’s construction, causing hazards to human safety and vehicles. The problem stems from the original construction technique, which left shattered rock faces adjacent to the edge of the road.

The diversity of the types of soils, rocks, and variations of cut slopes require a variety of treatments to adequately address the problems that afflict the roadway. The most extensive of the proposed action is at a tunnel located midway along the corridor. The tunnel, 520 feet in length, is one of the few tunnels located on the New Mexico State Highway system. Survey and geospatial data acquired from this project will provide NMDOT engineers with the required information to design slope protection for 24 problematic land slide areas, with specific focus on the tunnel.

This project utilized multiple survey and mapping techniques including conventional ground surveying and right of way mapping, GPS, high definition laser scanning, aerial photography, conventional photogrammetry with automated elevation modeling, and high resolution color digital orthophoto.  This geospatial data was subsequently integrated and merged to develop a comprehensive and very accurate base model of the existing terrain.

Celebrating more than 75 years of service, Wilson & Company currently employs over 450 staff and maintains 15 offices throughout nine states.  The firm is a full-service, multidisciplined surveying, mapping, right of way acquisition, engineering, architecture, and construction management firm.  For more information, visit www.wilsonco.com.
